Mountain study tour
Mountain Study Center @Green Institute organizes Mountain study tour (an expedition-based schooling program on Nepal’s mountain/community development).The tour program is designed and developed by Mountain Study Center at the Green Institute.
Mountain study tour is an excursion or expedition based learning program. The duration of the program is 35 days'( 5 WEEKS). The program deals with issues related to mountain, communities and sustainable mountain development in context of Nepal. The students will travel in mountain areas (up to Mt. EVEREST BASE CAMP) through trekking. Before the expedition, the students have to work at a mountain community as a volunteer to serve the mountain people and support developmental initiatives.
Objective of the program:
The main objective of the program is to further develop practical knowledge of international students and people about diverse mountain issues and mountain community development in context of Nepal, by working and traveling in mountain region.
Learning will be focused around following areas:
- Developmental issues in Mountain communities
- Climate change and its impacts on mountain/ communities
- Mountain biodiversity
- Mountain tourism
- Mountain Culture
- Mountain people &livelihood/economy
- Mountain disasters
- Project work
System of learning/teaching
This is not a class-room based learning program. This is totally a practical educational excursion program. The learning activities will involve : trekking in mountain or himalayan region, living and working with mountain people and communities, serving the mountain communities and people.
13 days will be spent for social works at mountain communities and remaining days will be for trekking in mountain region up to the Everest base camp and back to Kathmandu.
A home-stay will be managed during the entire period of social work. The students will have to stay at a home of local people and have local foods served by the people. During mountain expedition/trekking, the students will have to stay at a local lodge or guest house owned by local people. It means, the students will have to stay in simple, rustic mountain lodges with shared basic facilities.
The students will have to write a report by conducting a study/research on any mountain developmental issues to be given by the research supervisor
Location: Solukhumbu district
Solukhumbu District is a familiar name in adventure and mountain tourism. There is a notable hiking trail known as the Solukhumbu Trail. The main attraction of the district is Mt. Everest (8,848m) and Sagarmatha National Park, UNESCO World Heritage site. The district is home to Indigenous people, Sherpa culture and Monasteries. The Khumjung village is famous for Sherpa culture. Gokyo valley and Khumbu valley are the major Himalayan valleys famous among the adventure and nature seekers. Gokyo Lake trek, Island peak climbing, solukhumbu, Mera Peak climbing, Mount Everest Exepedition, Amadablam expedition, and Lobuche peak climbing are the popular adventure trips in Solukhumbu district.
Study tour highlights:
- Trekking to the foot of the world’s highest mountain (Mt.Everest)
- Trekking to Everest Base Camp (5380 m)
- Visiting UNESCO World heritage site ( National Park) and enjoying in natural world of Himalayan region
- Exploring Sherpa villages, cultures and the ancient monasteries
- Visiting schools destroyed by earthquake and working at such school as a volunteer
Upon completion of the field-based learning program/tour, submission of a report and power point presentation, the students will get the certificate.
International students or foreigners are eligible to join the mountain study tour program.
Mr. Santosh Basnet is a highly experienced Adventure Mountain Guide in Nepal Himalayas. He is a Government certified and officially licensed Trekking Guide in Nepal. He has taken several trainings in all aspects of tourism. With over 12 years of experience in the tourism industry, he has acquired a wealth of information and knowledge about Nepal; including natural resources, climate, biodiversity, regional geography, religions, buddhism, religious beliefs, culture and traditions.
He has gathered a lot of experiences while trekking across the country, and very familiar with many famous Nepal trekking trails such as Everest Region, Annapurna Region, Kanchanjungha region, Dolpo, Langtang, Mustang etc. He speaks English fluently.
