6 weeks’ field-based leadership development course on
Sustainable rural community development of Nepal

Rural development school program is a joint initiative of the Green Institute and Team for Nature and Wildlife(TNW) Nepal, one of the leading NGOs of Nepal. Rural Development school is a field-based schooling program on sustainable rural community development. The duration of the course is 6 weeks. The course deals with issues related to sustainable rural community development in context of Nepal. The program offers practical understanding and experiences of diverse social, cultural, environmental, humanitarian, economical issues and problems in rural communities of Nepal.

The main objective of the program is to make young people knowledgeable and experienced on Nepal’s rural affairs and develop leadership culture and skill of young people to lead a community, society, organization, project and initiative effectively and efficiently. The students are encouraged to work in extremely rural & remote communities, serve the community people, directly communicate and interact with the community people, observe them, learn from them and lead them as a servant leader. It is totally a field based and community based program in which the young people will have to spend his or her entire time in a very poor, underprivileged and backward rural/remote community and work to serve the people as a development practitioner. They have to help the people to develop the community on sustainable way.

During the period of schooling, the graduates will be engaged on following areas of activities:

Expected outputs:

  • The graduates will have ability to plan, develop, lead, manage & execute community developmental activities/projects
  • The graduates will be able to work in a multicultural environment, with people from diverse social, religious, ethnic and cultural background;
  • The graduates will have ability to adjust in difficult living conditions, remote and hardship locations;
  • The graduates will have strong interpersonal and organizational skills
  • The graduates will have practical knowledge, idea and skill on rural community development

System of learning/teaching

rural schoolingThis is not a class-room based course. It is totally a practical and field based learning program. It is about traveling in rural communities, working with the people & serving the people for learning. The students will have to go to rural communities to spend moments with rural people.

home stay_n

A home-stay will be managed during the entire field-based study.The students will have to stay at a home of local people and have local foods served by the people. The host family will serve at least 2 meals ( a plate of rice, vegetables, curry, lentils, pickles) a day. Staying with a host family will give you cultural experiences and rural lifestyle.

The students will have to write a report by conducting a study/research on any rural developmental issues to be given by the research supervisor. A highly knowledgeable person about rural developmental issues will coordinate the field-based study as a coordinator and mentor.

Certification
Upon completion of the field-based study program, submission of a report and power point presentation, the students will get two certificates( A certificate of volunteering for TNW’s Sustainable Village Initiative& A certificate of the course).

Eligibility: 

National and International students/foreigners under the age of 45 with strong interest to serve the disadvantaged people, learn to lead as a servant leader are eligible

Team for Nature and Wildlife(TNW) is a not-for profit making, non-governmental, grassroots and community-based organization governed by a team of environmental activists, environmentalists, developmental workers, scholars, filmmakers, journalists/media persons, ICT professionals and young people.

Mission: Sustainable community development & economic growth through the protection and conservation of natural resources, democratic environmental governance, awareness, advocacy, campaigning, better education, capacity development, sustainable infrastructure development & application of science and technologies

Rural Development schooling program also attempts to promote Sustainable Village Initiative (SVI). Team for Nature & Wildlife (TNW) Nepal, an NGO has launched Sustainable Village Initiative (SVI) to promote sustainable development of a rural community. Under the initiative, TNW Nepal attempts to raise socio-economic status of the rural people through the utilization, management and democratic governance of natural resources.

In particular, TNW Nepal focuses on commercialization and modernization of agriculture, agriculture based enterprise development and economic development. Likewise, TNW works in partnership with local communities and community stakeholders for local natural resources’ conservation, disasters resistance infrastructures development; better education, awareness, access to information, better health services, capacity development and ICT based development.

SVI is a program based on teamwork and partnership with local people especially with young people and women.

Prangarik Pathshala is a SCHOOL of AGRICULTURE founded to inspire, educate, empower/train & engage farmers including young men and women in technology based commercial agriculture/agro-entrepreneurship and produce agricultural entrepreneurs & competent human resources in agriculture sector. It promotes small, medium-sized and large-scale enterprises in agriculture sector through technical education, vocational training/skill development, agricultural extension services, knowledge transfer, innovations in agriculture, modernization, mechanization and application. It attempts to contribute for the creation of jobs through the promotion and development of agro-enterprise and agri-business.
